Another big milestone this weekend - gearbox went back in last week, so now she's home! First time in the garage, so wasn't 100% sure it was going to fit! But she went in... just! with only about 2 inches to spare in the length. Big cars, these old Zephyrs! This was also my first proper drive as well & it was quite exciting! The old girl actually drives surprisingly well - handles nice, goes straight & the brakes are ok. Motor pulls like a train too. I took it steady though - still a bit spluttery, cos it could do with fresh plugs & the carb setting up properly. Also still have a bit of a leak from one of the heater hoses which I need to sort, but definitely feels like it's gonna go well! Now the big clean up starts, inside & out, to get it ready for paint. Happy days! Cheers, Robbo

Russ D Wicked! Nice one mate, bet that was an ace drive that put a smile a mile wide on ya chops! robbo149 N.H.R.C Member Post by robbo149 on Nov 23, 2013 at 4:31pmCheers Russ. Yes, it was great being behind the wheel of a 'proper' motor again! I do love these old cars - so much more fun than the modern daily . Had the old girl out the garage for a couple of hours this afternoon to do a bit. Been spoilt these last couple of months, having use of a proper workshop. Unfortunately, it's back to working on the drive in freezing temperatures again! Drained the coolant & pulled out the leaking heater hoses. I've just bypassed the heater matrix for now & 'U'd' a new hose back to the engine. I do have another heater matrix in the store cupboard, if I decide to plumb one back in, in future. Probably not a moment too soon for a coolant change either - I right mucky mess came out! Mind you, it has been stood for about 4 years! So, it's now refilled with a fresh 50/50 mix. After that was done, I just had time to give the manky glass a bit of a clean, inside & out. I can now see out, which is useful! Still plenty of cleaning to do though! Might get started on scrubbing the interior tomorrow . Cheers, Robbo Read more: www.northernhotrodclub.proboards.com/thread/2086/302-zephyr-codename-project-3?page=1#page=6#ixzz2lgcmrADk

Been a bit slack last couple of weeks, so apologies for the lack of updates! Cold weather & not having the use of proper workshop facilities, plus Xmas shopping, visiting family, buying another new daily, etc, etc... I did try getting it out the garage last weekend, with a fully charged battery, after flattening it & running out of petrol the week before! But the starter solenoid has packed up now, I think - it's just clicking & not turning the starter (battery's definitely fully charged, sounds like solenoid is stuck?). Got a new solenoid to try, so that's the next job - get it running again, then I can sort out the leaking gearbox pan. Got a swanky new Trickflow ally one to fit, plus new gaskets. Then that's all the leaks sorted, hopefully! & we can finally move on to paintwork . Been getting some blue flake vinyl samples too, ready for the interior I WILL be on the road for next spring! Cheers, Robbo

Well, after a couple of weeks doing feck all, with the crap weather & Xmas stuff going on, I thought I ought to get my finger out & do a bit! Got a little dry spell on Sunday, so pushed the Zephyr out the garage to have a look it the dodgy starter solenoid. A couple of the wires looked I bit iffy, so I replaced them first, but it's still just clicking, so I'm going to have to fit a new one. Gave it up for the day though, cos it was bloody freezing! Weathers been crap since, so thought I'd have a couple of hours in the garage this morning & do a bit on the interior. So, I've spent all morning scrubbing! But at least now the headlining & dash are nice & clean! Got rid of all the stubborn stains . Hopefully, when it dries up a bit, I can get it out the garage again & do the solenoid & get it running again! Cheers, Robbo

Well, after a couple of weeks of annoying non-starting & non-running issues, I finally got a dry afternoon to get the Zephyr out & sort it. So far, I'd replaced the coil (old one was only reading half the resistance it should have been on the multimeter). I'd also cleaned up all the earth leads & battery terminals & it was now cranking over like a good 'un, but not firing . So, today I did a few more bits: blew out the fuel lines, fitted new spark plugs, adjusted the choke cable, adjusted the fuel pressure regulator & put another tenners worth of fresh fuel in... pull out the choke, turn the key, wait for the pump to prime & hey presto! fires straight up like a charm! The new coil & plugs have made a hell of a difference - runs so smooth now, engine sounds bloody brilliant! (apart from a slight blow from one of the exhaust manifolds) & starts up first turn of the key now! It was taking ages to fire up before, I guess that must have been down to the dodgy old coil. Took it for a quick spin round the block to warm it up & get the fresh fuel through & thoroughly enjoyed it! motor runs so sweet now, just idling a little high in neutral once it's warmed up. Could probably do with the carb setting up properly at some point. Just got the leaking speedo cable seal & gearbox sump to sort now, then it's off for paint! Happy days! Cheers, Robbo

Not so good this weekend - gearbox trouble! The auto on the Zeph has never been that great shifting through the gears (although I've not really driven it much so far). It's been a bit random shifting up & down when in drive, so I was hoping that replacing a few seals, new vac modulator, to fix a few leaks, plus some fresh ATF would sort it out. Fraid not! Did all the work on the box Sat morning & it's now even worse - when in drive, it has to rev quite a bit before it will even start moving & still shifting up & down randomly . Apart from a couple of new seals & a sump gasket, the only new part I've fitted is the vac modulator & that's exactly the same type as the old one, so I did a bit of reading up on tinternet about them, see if I could get any pointers. Anyway, to cut a long story short, it transpires that there's a couple of bits missing where the vac modulator fits into the box - a valve & a rod, which sounds like what's causing the problems. So, I now need to try & get hold of the missing bits, dismantle the lower part of the box to fit them, or just bite the bullet & source another box! Not happy! Cheers, Robbo

It'll get sorted mate. It's just another setback, delaying me getting it on the road! I was hoping to have it done by the end of March I'm just trying to source the bits I need - see if I can fix it myself, before I go down the road of a rebuild or a new box! Looks like I'll only be able to get the parts from the States - Rock Auto have what I need, just depends how long they take to come. Cheers, Robbo
