Just registered with the forum and thought I'd drop in to introduce myself and my project car. I'd been messing with classic cars, (all 70's coupes), for the past 15 years but got bored with the scene so decided to build something mildly customised that I could use as a daily driver. Anyways.... I had this old Sunbeam Rapier in the lock up that I was planning to restore as standard and then I got to thinking that it would look better if it were remodelled on the later Barracuda rather than the original one. So I started welding panels in and then I lost my mojo mainly cos there were too many distractions going on around me at the time.
Now I'm back to it and seeing some small progress is firing me up again. Hoping to at least get it back on the road for next summer even if it's running with the standard engine. Then maybe look at putting something a little more interesting under the hood over the winter time whilst it's laid up. In the mean time I'm checking out your metal on here and have to say there are plenty of interesting cars and look forward to seeing more of 'em at next summer's events.

Hi Acorn..... Never had a Capri but probably was because I remember being disappointed when it came out because I thought Ford were giving us a RHD Maverick. Never forgiven them for that. Got a Holbay engine for it though that I bought off of a guy in Darwen a couple of years ago. Also got an E128 high lift camshaft that was only made available for rally cars cos Chrysler thought it was too strong for road use and were afraid of the warranty claims. That would give around 130bhp which ain't bad for a 40 year old 1725cc 4 pot banger I guess. The Holbay is definitely the short term answer but might go with the Crossfire V6 in the longer term cos it would probably be more practical for daily use. Uploaded a couple more pics that I'll post here but will probably start a thread in the 'Garage' section when I get a little time and will post the updates in there. Engine apart the car is probably 75% done I just need to blitz it over the next few months and I'll make it to first base. Boot lid..... redecked H120 lid. Been playing around with some ideas for the front end and like this one best. Bit of a mock up using a damaged spare bumper that I cut down to try it with. Tim

Welcome Tim. Nice car, remember the Holbay engine well. Rebuilt one for a friends Alpine many years ago.

PS Nowt wrong with Capri (Mk1) Don't take me too seriously even though it is true to some extent, but I was an impressionable kid in those times obsessed with yankee metal. I wouldn't care but the guy that told me it resembled a Maverick only RHD, was a school mate's dad who was the service manager at Tom Mellor Ford in Rochdale. I remember thinking..... 'it looks sod all like a Maverick'. Pillock! Problem was in those times you had to rely on the word of others cos there was no internet to check things out for yourself. I'm sure I'm over it now ....... cos I actually bid on one on the bay of all dodgy motors a few years back. I had a space here at the time and it occurred to me that a Capri could be the way to go for my next project. It was the only one I really liked being the facelift GTXLR model. Missed out by about £50 despite throwing in an extended bid in the death throes of the auction, as we all do when we are serious. Plan was to take those stupid rear side plastic (vent?) things off and just keep the rest standard. Purple metallic, vinyl roof, bit tatty but by no means a basket case. IIRC it had an after market sun roof fitted which the owner admitted was leaking. Which kind of cooled my bidding finger a little cos you hear some real horror stories with sunroofs and water trapped under vinyl. It went for just under a grand which is probably very cheap now. So...... I guess it just wasn't to be.

Working my ass off to get the car back on the road for next month. Planning to take it to the goth's and rodder's show in Whitby. Hopefully I'll have plenty of shakedown time driving it around locally so I'll be in with a chance of getting there. Car is now in black (strategic choice to try to hide the window rubbers), either way it will fit in quite well with all the hearses and gloomy stuff there. Will be putting some pics up soon. All I've got to do then is replace the engine and tranny and sort the rear axle out! Gonna be a busy winter!

I'm thinking you mean the Flat caps and ferret show the first weekend in September. No chance...... but might have a drive over anyway cos it's one I've never been to. Though I should really be working on the car I'm thinking. Is no mention of the show here on the forum, I had to google it to find out when it was on.
